Not Sure If You Are Enjoying Your Career? You Aren't The Only One

You wake up every single morning during the work week to get ready for your job. Monday through Friday, you're on the clock. Eights hours a day for forty-plus hours a week. It's your livelihood.

It's how you make money to survive, provide for your loved ones, and enjoy extracurricular activities with friends or romantic partners. You're starting to realize that you spend more time at work than you do at home.

Lately, it's felt like home is a place for sleeping, eating, and getting ready for work. You really only have Saturdays and Sundays. And let's be honest, you're starting to experience the dreaded Sunday Scaries from not really wanting to go back to work on Monday morning.

Not sure if you're enjoying your career? Don't worry, you aren't the only one. Here's what to do if you're not exactly sure what you enjoy doing

Strive for a Healthy Work-Life Balance

Even if you feel like your career makes up a good chunk of your life, it's not your entire life. Your life can and should be filled with different activities and people. Work doesn't have to be the topic that's always on your mind. You should be able to turn off work from time to time, especially after working hours and on weekends. Find time for self-care, hanging out with your friends and family, going to the gym, or just chilling and relaxing at home. You don't have to work 24 hours a day 7 days a week to be successful. Get your work done during the week so you can focus on other things, including yourself, during your free time.

Do the Things You Love

If you have a hobby that you enjoy doing, start incorporating that more into your daily life and routine. Start taking classes, signing up for training or certifications, or hanging out with like-minded individuals. You never know what could happen unless you try. Your passion could eventually lead to your purpose in life. Even if it doesn't lead to an actual career, dedicating some of your free time to activities that you actually enjoy and love can be very beneficial toward your overall mental health and wellness.

Take Breaks

Take breaks every now and then. During the day, this could mean stepping outside and taking a walk during your lunch break. Or it could be something bigger like taking a personal day. It could even mean planning out a staycation or an actual vacation to get away for a bit. You may just need a little rest and relaxation to rejuvenate yourself again before diving into work again.

Next Steps

You're definitely not alone if you're not quite sure if you actually enjoy the career that you chose. In the past, our parents and grandparents would stay in their first job for years on end, maybe even retiring from the first job they ever had. It wasn't as common to switch companies or even careers.

Thankfully, mental health is starting to become more widely researched, acknowledged, and accepted. A lot more people aren't as comfortable with settling anymore. If they're unhappy, they're a lot more willing to keep searching until they find their version of happiness.

Sometimes taking that chance on yourself isn't as easy as it is for others. That's okay too. Luckily, you don't have to go through this on your own. Help is available to you. All you have to do is ask for it.

Reaching out to a therapist can be a great way to help you determine what you're looking for, sort through your likes and dislikes, and helping to increase your confidence in yourself to go after what you want for your life.
